Managing Domains

Domain management is highly technical and even small mistakes can break your website, prevent email delivery, ruin your online reputation, or have other negative consequences for your business.

When you buy a hosting plan, a care plan, or a domain with us, we also manage your domain for you. We offer this service as part of your plan, at no extra charge, because it makes things easier for both of us: You don’t have to deal with all the technical nuances, and we can do our job much more efficiently.

To be able to manage your domains, we need access to them. In general, there are are a few ways to do this:

  1. You can grant us direct access to your accounts. Although we store your credentials safely in our password manager, we do not recommend this option. We offer it because some customers prefer it over the others but it’s not an ideal solution.
  2. We can buy a domain on your behalf and manage it in our account. This is probably the easiest option for many customers, but it also has some important downsides you should be aware of. The biggest downside is that although the domain is yours from our perspective, it’s technically under our control.
  3. You can grant us limited access to your accounts using sub-accounts or delegation. This is almost always the best option. It’s safest for you, gives you oversight over your domains while delegating the actual work to us, never exposes your personal and billing info to us, and keeps the domains 100% under your control. And it’s not difficult to do.

Although you technically have the option of managing your domains on your own, that makes our job much more difficult. If you’re sufficiently proficient to modify DNS records when we provide detailed technical instructions, it could work. But it’s usually a recipe for disaster and if anything goes wrong, we won’t be able to properly diagnose it or fix it in a timely manner.
