VPS Providers #

If you have a hosting plan and are ready to go live, we’ll spin up a server for your website. In other words, we’ll acquire a VPS machine from one of the VPS providers that we use and set it up to run your website.

The machine will only host your website so it won’t have to share limited resources, such as disk space, memory, and CPU with other websites. All of these resources will be put to use exclusively for your website.

We use multiple VPS providers because that gives us a wider selection from which to choose. That’s important because availability, pricing, capabilities, location, limitations, and other factors vary greatly between the different providers and they change over time. By working with multiple providers, we can choose the constellation that makes the most sense for any particular use.

At present, these are the main VPS providers we use:

  • Vultr
  • Digital Ocean
  • Hetzner
  • UpCloud

We’re also evaluating additional VPS providers and will update this list as they become available.

Default Specs #

When you get our managed WordPress VPS hosting plan, we guarantee the following specs or better, regardless of the VPS provider we use:

  • CPUs: 1
  • Memory: 1 GB
  • Storage: 25 GB (SSD)
  • Traffic: 1 TB

If you know that you need to optimize for one or more of these characteristics, let us know. We may be able to simply use a different provider without it affecting the price. We’ll be happy to discuss your options with you.

Growth #

When your website grows and nears these limits, it’s time to upgrade the machine. We will notify you when that time arrives and discuss the upgrade options.

In most cases, upgrading is simple. When you confirm the upgrade and update your billing, we’ll upgrade the hardware with the same provider. This is the smoothest upgrade path and has the fewest consequences for your website.

At this time, we cannot upgrade just one characteristic. If you run out of disk space, for example, you’ll have to upgrade the whole machine, though you’ll also usually get more CPUs, memory, and/or storage.

When you upgrade, we’ll charge you only for expenses. If we pay 5 USD to upgrade the machine, for example, you’ll pay us the same 5 USD plus any taxes (e.g., sales tax, vat, etc.) and fees (e.g., transfer fees, currency fees, etc.). Note that we don’t impose our own fees and we don’t take a profit on the hardware upgrades.

Depending on the provider, the first upgrade typically costs 5-6 USD per month, though it can vary. We’ll always let you know the prices before the upgrade.
